The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ghent University offers a position for a residency of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine, Behavioural medicine.

The Behavioural Medicine Residency at Ghent University is a three-year programme that is designed to provide advanced training in Behavioural Medicine to satisfy the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM) residency requirements.
The behavioural medicine at Ghent University currently employs one board-certified EBVS specialist, a part-time collaborator and one PhD student. The behavioural specialist has training in all animal species. The behavioural medicine unit can rely on the support of many EBVS specialists in all relevant clinical disciplines (neurology, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, …) for behaviour. Additionally, a main support is provided by the medical imaging unit that dispose of a high-tech 320 slice CT scanner (for both small and large animals, including standing horses), a low-field MRI scanner (for both small and large animals) and a gamma camera for nuclear imaging (only for small animals).
Residents rotate between different locations in Belgium, France or the UK allowing them to gain an extended experience. The residents will possibly participate to the after-hours emergency cases. Periods of off-clinic time will be assigned according to the residency programme. The behavioural medicine resident will participate in known case conference rounds, journal club, and rounds.
Behavioural Medicine residents will have opportunities to attend conferences, webinars, … In addition to clinical training and responsibilities, residents will have the opportunity to develop clinical research techniques, writing skills and lecture preparation/delivery skills. Involvement in a clinical, translational, or fundamental research project under the supervision of a faculty member is required. The behaviour unit has a long of research collaboration with human colleagues on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
Applicants are expected to have substantial experience in clinical veterinary medicine. Only veterinarians who are graduate of an EAEVE-approved veterinary school and are licensed or eligible to practice veterinary medicine in Belgium can be accepted for the programme. Moreover, they should have successfully completed a one-year rotating internship or have spent at least two years in practice gaining clinical experience and skills equivalent to an internship in accordance with EBVS guidelines.
The applicant must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Applicants should have a good level of English and Dutch language.
Appointments will be made for 12 months, with annual renewal based on satisfactory completion of the previous year.
